Jose Mourinho surprisingly started Fernando Torres ahead of
Romelu Lukaku for Chelsea's Premier League opener against Hull City
Tigers on Sunday.
A couple of years ago, the decision wouldn't have been much of a shock as Torres was a household name who could score goals for fun.
Now, however, it is a completely different story as the striker hasn't been able to hit the level of performances he put in while at Liverpool.
The 29-year-old only managed to net eight goals in the league last
season - which is a terrible return for a striker who was playing in
front of world-class playmakers such as Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Frank
Lampard.
Lukaku on the other hand bagged 17 goals while on loan at West Brom - a superb total for someone playing at a mid-table club.
The Belgian international will be looking to play as many games as possible this year as he looks to seal a first-team place in Marc Wilmots' Belgian national side.
To do that, Lukaku will have to be given the opportunity to play games otherwise he might look to seal another loan move away from the club.
His national team's squad is already littered with a number of top strikers - with Lukaku set to battle the likes of Premier League duo Christian Benteke and Kevin Mirallas for a starting berth.
Meanwhile, Torres was reinstated into the Spanish national team after a brief absence during last season when he appeared to have had hit rock bottom.
Chelsea are likely to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, a structure which suits Chelsea down to the ground, particularly as Mata, Hazard and Oscar are likely to play behind a lone striker.
That would leave Lukaku, Torres, Demba Ba and maybe even a new striker battling for one position.
It will be particularly interesting to see who starts Chelsea's match against Aston Villa on Wednesday night as Lukaku and Torres continue to vie for a starting role.
If Lukaku is not guaranteed a starting spot, the striker - despite him still being only 20 - may have to seal a move away from the club in order to start in Brazil next summer.
Lukaku has proven himself in the Premier League, so should be handed the opportunity to impress the Stamford Bridge faithful.
