Breaking Down Chelsea's Champions League Group E Opponents

The draw for the group stages of the 2013-14 Champions League took place in Monaco on August 29. Chelsea were the fifth team to be drawn from Pot One into Group E. They were then joined by Schalke ’04 and FC Basel before Steaua Bucharest completed the group.
Two of those opponents will be very familiar to Chelsea, as they beat both Basel and Bucharest on their way to the Europa League title last season. Schalke were the runners up in Chelsea's Champions League group in 2007-08, the year that the West London side reached the final for the first time.

The Germans were knocked out of the competition by Barcelona that year and struggled to make it past the group stages for a few years. A 6-1 aggregate defeat to Manchester United in the 2011 semifinal is their best showing in the competition to date.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho blasts Europe’s major spenders

Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, has escalated his complaint about those clubs who appear to be ignoring UEFA’s new financial fair-play regulations, describing them as “economic sharks”.

Despite spending 60-million pounds (US$93-million) on new players this summer, Chelsea are determined not to remain reliant on the funding of owner Roman Abramovich and have made a sustained effort to meet UEFA’s guiding principle that clubs must be self-sufficient. It has restricted some of their spending, with Chelsea dropping their interest in Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani once Moncao and Paris St-Germain launched huge offers.
PSG and Monaco generate significantly less revenue than Chelsea but have suddenly become major players on the world transfer market following respective funding from Qatari and Russian owners.

Pep Guardiola adamant Bayern Munich were the best team in the European Super Cup

Pep Guardiola was adamant that the best team won after Bayern Munich beat Chelsea on penalties to win the European Super Cup.
Manuel Neuer saved Romelu Lukaku's penalty after Javi Martinez's equaliser with the last kick of the game sent the tie into a shoot-out.
After the match, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho claimed the best team had lost, particularly after his side had been reduced to 10 men on 85 minutes after Ramires was sent off.
However, Guardiola had a contrasting view of the enthralling encounter in Prague which had finished 2-2.
"It's his opinion," said Guardiola, when informed of Mourinho's thought that the best team lost. "It's normal, he can say that his team deserved better than what happened.

Bayern Munich 2 Chelsea 2: The best team lost, insists José Mourinho

Jose mourinho claimed “the best team lost” after 10-manChelsea were beaten by Bayern Munich 5-4 on penalties in the Uefa Super Cup in Prague.

The Blues edged into an early first-half lead when Spanish striker Fernando Torres finished off a slick Chelsea move started by the impressive Eden Hazard.
However, despite the early setback, Bayern were largely dominant and Uefa’s Best Player of
the Year Franck Ribery capped a good week with a brilliant equaliser in the 47th minute.
Ramires was dismissed for a second bookable offence with eight minutes of normal time remaining, before the showpiece went into extra-time and Hazard appeared to have scored the winner in the 93rd minute.
But Chelsea couldn’t contain Bayern as Dante netted a last-gasp strike which forced the match into a penalty shootout, with Blues youngster Romelu Lukaku missing the decisive spot-kick.
“Yes, I’m disappointed,” Mourinho told his post-match news conference.
“I’m disappointed because in my opinion – and it’s just my opinion which I can have without being punished – is the best team lost.
“The team that deserves to win more lost. But that’s football. Sometimes it happens. The best team doesn’t always win. It’s acceptable because that’s football.”
On Ramires’ sending off, Mourinho added: “Football is 11 against 11. 11 against 10 is of course easier for the team with 11 and the team with 10.
“I have a fantastic experience with playing with 10 men in Uefa matches. My players gave absolutely everything.”

UEFA Super Cup: Bayern Munich see off Chelsea on penalties after thrilling draw

Bayern Munich won the UEFA Super Cup 5-4 on penalties following a pulsating 2-2 draw with Chelsea after extra time.
Romelu Lukaku's miss proved decisive after the shoot-out started with nine successful spot-kicks, as Bayern gained some revenge for their defeat by Chelsea in the 2012 Champions League final.
Fernando Torres had broken the deadlock in Prague with a wonderful first-time strike from Andre Schurrle's cut-back following a swift counter-attack in the eighth minute.
Bayern responded strongly and carved out a number of chances to equalise before half-time, but they had to wait until the 47th minute to draw level when Franck Ribery blasted a long-range strike past Petr Cech.
The German side continued to boss proceedings but Chelsea remained dangerous on the break and Oscar, Branislav Ivanovic and David Luiz all came close to netting a winner in normal time, before Ramires was dismissed for a second bookable offence after 85 minutes.
Eden Hazard restored Chelsea's lead early in extra time with a fine solo goal and it looked like being the winner as Cech made several great saves, until Javi Martinez struck in the dying seconds to send the Super Cup to penalties for the first time and Manuel Neuer kept out Lukaku's spot-kick.
With Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola renewing their tactical rivalry from their time in Spain, it was Chelsea who drew first blood on eight minutes through Torres.
Torres, restored to start following a striker-less line-up at Manchester United, firing powerfully home from Schurrle's cross in the eighth minute after Hazard had launched a fast break.
Bayern dominated after the goal, with Chelsea starved of possession and squeezed into their own half, but they had to wait until the second period to level when Ribery succeeded where he had narrowly failed in the first period.
The Frenchman cut in from the left before scoring with a fierce right-foot shot.
Neuer spread himself well to save from Oscar and Frank Lampard fired the rebound over.
Luiz antagonised Bayern at every set-piece and was booked for a foul on Mario Mandzukic in an increasingly feisty encounter.
Toni Kroos and Jerome Boateng had efforts before Ivanovic hit the crossbar with a header and Neuer held a Schurrle shot.
Ramires was sent off for a foul on Mario Gotze which earned him his second yellow card, putting Chelsea under further pressure.
Bayern tried to win the game in the remaining five minutes of normal time and Ribery fired wide after a one-two on the edge of the area with Gotze before the whistle blew and Mourinho and Chelsea players hounded the officials.
It was the 10 men of Chelsea who re-took the lead, when Hazard danced in from the left, by the static Martinez and Boateng, before drilling low into the net.
Cech saved a Xherdan Shaqiri effort as Bayern attempted to respond for a second time, but the Blues reached the extra-time interval knowing they had to survive for 15 minutes more.
Mandzukic was twice denied by Cech and Shaqiri was unable to divert a Martinez header down goalwards following a great clearance by Gary Cahill.
Mourinho threw John Terry into the action, in place of Hazard, for the final seven minutes, as Bayern continued to go forward.
Cech saved from Gotze and Ribery but could not hold out as Martinez netted with the last kick of extra-time to force penalties.
And on this occasion, Bayern triumphed.

ETO'O SIGNS

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Samuel Eto'o from Anzhi Makhachkala.
The 32-year-old has signed a one-year contract and on finalising the transfer he said: 'I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible.
'It wasn't a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.'
A prolific striker who has scored goals at the highest level throughout his career, Eto'o learned his trade in his native Cameroon before joining the Real Madrid youth academy in 1997. He then embarked on loan spells with Leganes, Espanyol and Real Mallorca.
His time at Mallorca proved a pivotal period in his early career, as a string of impressive displays earned Eto'o a permanent move to the club in 2000. The highlight there came when he scored twice to help his side to a 3-0 win over Recreativo in the 2003 Copa del Rey final.

Group H: Barcelona, AC Milan, Ajax, Celtic

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: READY FOR THE DRAW

While Chelsea train in Prague on Thursday afternoon, the rest of Europe's eyes will be fixed firmly on the Champions League draw taking place in Monaco.
Scheduled to start at 4.45pm UK time, the draw will see us and 31 other sides from across the continent discover our group stage opponents as we join the competition for an 11th successive campaign.
We take our place in the Pot 1 containing the eight top-seeded teams, to be joined by one side from Pots 2, 3 and 4. Other sides in Pot 1 we avoid meeting are tomorrow night's opponents and present champions Bayern Munich, the Spanish pairing of Barcelona and Real Madrid and the Portuguese sides Porto and Benfica, while clubs from the same country cannot meet each other until the quarter-final stages, meaning Manchester United and Arsenal, also in Pot 1, would be avoided anyway.
Pot 2 is guaranteed to bring opposition we have previously faced.
AC Milan were our first ever Champions League opponents, drawing 0-0 at Stamford Bridge in 1999 before Dennis Wise netted a famous equaliser to earn us a 1-1 draw in the San Siro. They beat PSV in last night's play-off second leg in Italy.
Atletico Madrid, with our on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in their ranks, were opponents in 2009 at this stage, while CSKA Moscow and Paris St-German were both opponents during Jose Mourinho's first season at the club in 2004.
Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk, former employers of Willian, were beaten 3-2 at Stamford Bridge last season after beating us 2-1 in Ukraine, while Italian champions Juventus earned a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge and beat us 3-0 in Turin.
Marseille won and lost against us at this stage in 2010, and we also met Schalke en route to Moscow in 2007, winning 2-0 at home and drawing 0-0 in Germany.
Pot 3 brings a mixture of old and new, with English rivals Manchester City also included.
We played FC Basel in the Europa League last season. We beat the Swiss side home and away on our way to Amsterdam.
Olympiacos and Galatasaray are also fairly recent opponents, the Greeks having been knocked out at the first knockout round in 2008, while Galatasaray were group opponents in 1999, when we recorded a 5-0 win in Turkey which remains our largest Champions League away win. Didier Drogba is of course now among their number.
Bayer Leverkusen were group stage opponents in 2011, when Andre Schurrle was representing the Germans, as we won at home but lost to two late goals away in Germany.
We have never met Zenit St Petersburg, Ajax or last season's finalists Borussia Dortmund competitively, and there are also three new sides we could face in Pot 4.
Scottish champions Celtic and Czech champions Viktoria Plzen would be new territory for the Blues with goalkeeper Petr Cech no doubt keen to find out if we are drawn against his first club, from his hometown, while we have never met Real Sociedad, fourth in Spain last season, competitively.
There is familiar opposition also, in the form of FC Copenhagen, who we beat in 2011 in the knockout stages, and Napoli. Rafael Benitez, our interim manager last season, who led us to Europa League success, is now in charge of the Italians, who we eliminated after extra-time in 2012 on our way to our Champions League win in Munich.
On last season's Europa League run we beat Steaua Bucharest on aggregate despite losing in Romania, and could face them again in Europe's premier competition this time around. Romelu Lukaku will be looking to see if we are drawn against his former club Anderlecht, who we beat home and away in 2005, while Austria Vienna, then known as Austria Memphis, were the opponents in 1994 when John Spencer's famous goal set us up for an away goals victory.

Eto'o deal almost done and dusted

Ba expected to be on his way as a result
With Chelsea not bothering to play with a recognised striker at Old Trafford on Monday, the Blues will attempt to rectify that on Friday by bringing back Fernando Torres for the Super Cup game against Bayern Munich at the Eden Arena in Prague.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho took a monumental risk by ditching Torres and Romelu Lukaku to the bench for the visit to Manchester United.
The fact that Chelsea got a 0-0 draw against the league champions will have silenced any critics, for now, but is something that will be a concern for the Chelsea hierarchy.
With Wayne Rooney opting to stay at United until at least the January transfer window, Chelsea have decided, as Chelsea-Mad revealed last week, that Samuel Eto'o is the man to lead the Blues to league and Champions League glory.
The 32-year-old Cameroon striker has lost a bit of his lightening pace but has a wealth of experience that he will need to draw on in the coming months.
Eto'o is expected to put pen to paper this week, subject to a medical on a one-year-deal with a further one-year option.
Torres will once again find he has a striker with a bigger reputation than him in front of him - he could not shake off Didier Drogba.
Demba Ba could move this week out of SW6 and back to Newcastle in a deal equal t the £7m the Blues paid for him in January.
One stumbling block would be his wages which could force the Toon to opt for a loan deal instead.
Ba is known to have a complicated arrangement in how he divvies up his salary and Newcastle will not want to be burden with that scenario and pay a hefty fee to Chelsea.
The transfer window closes on Monday.

WILLIAN TRANSFER COMPLETED

Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Willian.
The 25-year-old Brazilian was today (Wednesday) granted a work permit and has signed a five-year contract, having moved to England from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. He will wear the number 22 shirt.
On completing his move, Willian said: 'I'm very happy to be here, it's been a dream of mine to come and play here.
'Chelsea are one of the best clubs in the world, and now I'm going to play for one of the best managers in the world, so I'm very happy and looking forward to it.'
Born on 9 August 1988, in Ribeirao Pires, Willian Borges da Silva played at Sao Paulo before moving to Corinthians at the age of nine.

Transfer news: Chelsea in advanced talks to sign Porto winger Christian Atsu

Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign winger Christian Atsu from Porto, according to Sky sources.
Jose Mourinho is thought to be keen to land the 21-year-old before the end of the transfer window.
Atsu is entering the final year of his contract with Porto and apparently a fee of around £3m will be enough to seal the deal for Chelsea.
Porto have failed in repeated attempts to extend Atsu's contract and are now keen to cash in on the player as he can speak to clubs in January to set up a Bosman deal.
The Ghana international first came to prominence two seasons ago when Porto loaned him to Rio Ave, where Atsu earned a reputation for being quick, direct and skilful.
Predominantly left sided, he has won 16 caps to date for the Black Stars, scoring three goals, and was part of the squad that finished fourth in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in South Africa earlier this year.

IVANOVIC: MORE TO DO

Branislav Ivanovic believes we can be satisfied with a start to the season that has brought us seven points from an available nine. Home wins against Hull City and Aston Villa were followed up by an away stalemate at Manchester United on Monday night, leaving us top of the Barclays Premier League, albeit having played a game more than most of our rivals at this early stage.
'It's good, it's very important, and the start of the season is important for us as a team so we can grow. We have a lot more to do but we are happy with the situation,' the 29-year-old said.
'The manager has his ideas, knows what players he wants and needs in the squad, and we are improving with the new players, the young guys. [Andre] Schurrle played very well and all our front line ran a lot [against Manchester United]. Maybe that was the key.
'It was a very difficult, physical game, with a lot of small details. It was important not to concede a goal and to try to play on the counter-attack. They played with four strikers and it was very difficult for us. We're happy with the clean sheet.'

Breaking news- Chelsea star Juan Mata’s dad spotted in the Arsenal director’s box

Juan Mata’s father and agent, Juan Snr, has been spotted in the director’s box for tonight’s match between Arsenal and Fenerbahce.
The Spain international appears to be out-of-favour at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.
He was first touted as a potential makeweight in the proposed deal to take Wayne Rooney to the Blues from Manchester United.
But the news that his agent is mingling with the Arsenal board will send the rumour mill into overdrive.
French journalist Julien Laurens broke the news on Twitter before later deleting his tweet. By that stage other news outlets, including BBC Radio 5 Live, were also reporting that Mata Snr had been seen in the director’s box before kick-off.

Torres Future In Doubt As Mourinho Declares He Isn't Worth £50m

After not playing with a recognized striker against Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has cast fresh doubt over the future of Fernando Torres saying that he is not worth the £50 million the club paid for him.

Chelsea struggled as they went forward against United last night as Torres sat out of the clash until the last 25 minutes and afterwards Mourinho lamented the hefty price tag on Torres.

“It is not really £50million [Torres’ value], maybe it is twenty and a half,” Mourinho was quoted in the Metro.

“He scored the goal that won the Europa League. That means some millions.

“He scored the goal against Everton that put Chelsea in the Champions League. That also means some millions.

“He is doing his job. He did it again.”

Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku were all on the bench at Old Trafford, with Mourinho preferring to opt for a fluid front four of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle.

Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea: Five Talking Points

Manchester united and Chelsea's 0-0 Premier League draw was so deathly dull support groups could be set up to counsel the millions who watched.
José Mourinho's tactics evoked memories of his conservative table-topping clashes from yesteryear while David Moyes has still not won in 12 attempts at Old Trafford, but at this early juncture the result was always going to be inconsequential.
Here are five talking points from Old Trafford...
MOURINHO RISKS UPSETTING ABRAMOVICH
With no striker in his selected side and the late substitution of John Obi Mikel a contented gesture, Mourinho risked antagonising Roman Abramovich with his pragmatic approach.
Chelsea's opening game win against Hull, featuring an hour-long lockdown after a vibrant first 30 minutes, was a homage to Mourinho Mk.I but the Portuguese is acutely aware of how such businesslike football displeased the club owner. Abramovich wanted Pep Guardiola when Roberto di Matteo was sacked but has had to settle for second best, and team's approach was too negative at Old Trafford.   Whereas United were let down by ineffectual wingers and a lack of creativity from midfield Chelsea, somewhat understandably as the away team, were shy. It was a throwback to the "big four" bore draws Mourinho infamously experienced in his first era, when goalless games with Liverpool were the norm.

Jose Mourinho coy on Wayne Rooney after Chelsea draw at United

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho insisted Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will decide his own future after the sides drew 0-0 at Old Trafford.
The Blues boss has already failed with two bids for the England star, who was cheered by Red Devils fans during a frustrating stalemate despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.
When asked whether he planned to make a third offer to Rooney, Mourinho said: "We have to speak but this club must be a very special club, because in every club in the world when a player wants to leave, they don't support him. They give him a hard time. But they support him all the way.

Premier League: Manchester United and Chelsea draw 0-0

Wayne Rooney turned in an all-action display for Manchester United at home to Chelsea on Monday, but the game ended 0-0.
The England striker started at Old Trafford against the club who have twice tried to sign him this summer, and was at the heart of almost all of United's best moves.
However, resolute defending from both teams prevented any real clear-cut chances, and the match was more notable for a series of penalty appeals - none of which inspired referee Martin Atkinson to point to the spot.
It was a night for centre-backs - United's Nemanja Vidic and Blues skipper John Terry were the outstanding performers - and Jose Mourinho will have come away the happier of the two managers.
Chelsea move a point clear of Liverpool at the top of the early table having played three games, while David Moyes' United rise to fourth.
With Mourinho having left Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku on the bench - along with Juan Mata - Chelsea struggled to hold the ball up in the first half

Manchester United v Chelsea - This is more than winnable for Chelsea!

Tonight the eyes of the world will be watching what has become one of the biggest games in the Premier League - Manchester United vs Chelsea. It's Moyes vs Mourinho round one as both managers will be looking to take three points and a strike psychological blow at this early stage of the season.

Fernando Torres or Romelu Lukaku?

It’s only fitting that on Monday night, Jose Mourinho’s third match in charge and first test against the top-class opponents of the Premier League would come in the form of a trip to Old Trafford to face last year’s champions, Manchester United. It’s only fitting, as it was Mourinho’s last trip with his Real Madrid side that brought about new controversy and saw him walk out a winner against United in last season’s Champions League. This time, it’s not Sir Alex Ferguson that will be his opposite number, but rather David Moyes, the man replacing Ferguson who has also been well-acquainted with Chelsea and Mourinho as manager of Everton.
Outside of the battle of the managers, which has been well-documented, it’s the battle on the pitch that will be the most important, and there is no doubt that both sides will want to put a marker

Jose Mourinho blames Manchester United boss David Moyes for Wayne Rooney transfer saga

Jose Mourinho says Manchester United manager David Moyes is to blame for putting Wayne Rooney at the centre of a summer transfer saga.
Mourinho claims Chelsea only made their move for Rooney after Moyes suggested the striker was second choice at Old Trafford behind Robin van Persie.
Chelsea are set to return with a third bid for Rooney following Monday night's Premier League clash between the sides, despite being told the England man is not for sale.
It was put to Mourinho that he will not be the most popular man at Old Trafford in a match where there is an opportunity to strike an early blow in the title race.

Chelsea refuse to rule out Juan Mata swap for Wayne Rooney

Jose Mourinho has deflected questions over Juan Mata’s future, and refused to rule out the possibility of a swap deal with Manchester United involving Wayne Rooney.
Mata’s future has been the subject of much speculation over the summer, and although Mourinho previously rubbished suggestion of his sale, Willian’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has further clouded the Spaniard’s role with the Blues.
The former Valencia man was mooted as a surprise makeweight in Chelsea’s first bid for Rooney, but the club insisted the offer was a straight cash deal.
When asked about what would happen if United wanted Mata in exchange for Rooney, Mourinho responded: ‘That’s hypothetical, because they didn’t ask.
‘The two answers we got from Man United is “we don’t accept the bid”, “we’re not interested in selling the player”.

Mourinho: United ‘old-fashioned’ in Rooney refusal

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has accused Manchester United of being ‘old-fashioned’ for refusing to sell Wayne Rooney to a rival club from the same country.
The Portuguese has been in hot pursuit of the unsettled striker this transfer window but United have turned down both bids he has lodged thus far.
The Premier League champions host Chelsea on Monday night and Mourinho, despite saying on Friday that he would not lodge a third bid until after the game – declaring that it would  be against his ‘ethical code’ – has urged United to let the player move to Stamford Bridge.
“To me it is not a difficult decision because you want very much to keep Rooney or you don’t want to keep him?”

BREAKING NEWS!!!! TERMS AGREED FOR WILLIAN

Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with both Willian and his club Anzhi Makhachkala for the transfer of the Brazilian player.
The transfer is subject to a work permit hearing on Wednesday.

Oscar confident of beating champions Manchester United

Chelsea midfielder Oscar has said that his side are confident of beating the reigning Premier League champions Manchester United in Monday's encounter.

The 21-year-old Brazilian has started both of Chelsea's Premier League games so far this season; a 2-0 opening day triumph over Hull City - in which he scored the opener - and Wednesday's 2-1 win at home to Aston Villa.

Report: Chelsea sign Samuel Eto'o and end Wayne Rooney pursuit

Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Samuel Eto'o, ending their interest in Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.

The deal to bring in the former Barcelona striker is part of the £30m transfer of fellow Anzhi Makhachkala forward Willian.

According to the Telegraph, Blues manager Jose Mourinho
