The Belgian
striker, 20, was all set to go to Merseyside on a season-long loan, but
Albion entered the race to try to bring him back to the Hawthorns, where
he starred last term.
And any move for Lukaku was likely to scupper a deal for Everton’s Victor Anichebe.
West
Brom had agreed a fee of more than £5million for the Nigerian, who was
on his way to the West Midlands before Steve Clarke’s late interest in
Lukaku.
Albion were also hoping to complete a
late deal of around £5.5m for Sunderland forward Stephane Sessegnon. And
their late-night transfer battle also paved the way for Shane Long to
join Hull for £5m, subject to the deals for two strikers going through.
Clarke
was desperate to sign players to help his side find the net, something
they have not done so far in this Premier League campaign.
He had earlier snapped up Morgan Amalfitano, 28, from Marseille on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal.
The versatile France international can play anywhere across the midfield or attack.
Free
agent Lee Camp, formerly of Nottingham Forest, also arrived as a
back-up goalkeeper with Ben Foster sidelined with a foot injury. He will
provide competition with other stoppers Boaz Myhill and Luke Daniels.
